South Korea ferry disaster

As it happened: South Korea ferry disaster

South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-won has resigned amid criticism of the government's handling of the sinking of a passenger ferry.
Chung Hong-won said resignation was "the right thing to do"

He said the "cries of the families of those missing still keep me up at night". Mr Chung will stay in his post until the disaster is under control.

"The right thing for me to do is to take responsibility and resign as a person who is in charge of the cabinet," Mr Chung said in a brief televised statement.

"On behalf of the government, I apologise for many problems from the prevention of the accident to the early handling of the disaster."

The Sewol ferry with 476 people aboard - most of them students and teachers - sank off South Korea on 16 April.
Officials have confirmed 187 died, but scores are missing presumed drowned.

It is not yet clear what caused the incident - witnesses described hearing an impact before the ship listed and quickly sank

Our heart and prayers go out to the people (high school students) that are fighting for their lives and the families that lost their loved ones. #koreanferry #NjCPrays

Your prayers count....send them in

  1. There were 24 self-opening Rescue-Islands on the Top Deck, and they are still are there, because neither theCaptain, nor the Crew let the Island drop to the water, when the were leaving the ship, instead of throwing These White Capsules ,containing the rescue Islands when they touch the water. fwe hundereds People and children coul still live. , I couls spit in front of Captain and Crew.

    1. yes, it would have been different... such negligence has caused bodily injury, not seeking rescue from other ships, ...
while 15 crew members responsible for the ship's navigation had been arrested, they have not been formally charged. hopefully, Investigations would determine the cause by consulting with experts and using simulations maybe that might bring a little comfort.
